towards the middle / through / upwards
electroacoustic composition

commissioned by Hessischer Rundfunk (2020) / stereo / 39 minutes

This composition was created as a result of a lengthy study of the 'Divine Comedy' by the poet Dante Aleghieri (1265-1321). The work is considered a key work of Italian literature of the Middle Ages. In it, the poet describes his experiences and encounters on his journey to the realm of the dead, crossing INFERNO (hell), PURGATORIO (purgatory) and PARADISO (heaven), to finally behold the Empyreum in its absolute transcendence.
Beyond all theological and historical references, this journey has always been seen as a metaphor for a journey into the innermost part of the human being.

The composition takes up the three-part nature of the 'Divine Comedy', but without tracing details musically. The three parts differ clearly from each other in material and character. Whereas in the first part towards the middle, sounds and noises are mostly abruptly and unpredictably set against each other, the second part through is characterised above all by long fades of a continuum derived from feedback sounds. The essential component of the third part upwards is a monolithic, constantly changing, complex synthesiser sound that transitions into a stable state towards the end.
