on the occasion of Liberation Day on May 8, 2025, about her father, the composer Hanning Schröder, who was banned from practicing his profession by the Reich Chamber of Music in 1935 and, together with his Jewish wife, the pianist and musicologist Cornelia Auerbach, sheltered a Jewish couple in their apartment during the final years of Nazi rule, thereby saving them from deportation to an extermination camp.

Nele Hertling is regarded as the grand dame of the independent theater, dance, and music scene. She was artistic director of Berlin’s Hebbel Theater, a venue with an international network for guest performances and in-house productions. She serves on numerous advisory boards (Goethe-Institut, Federal Cultural Foundation, among others), as vice president of the Berlin Academy of Arts, and is president of the German-French Cultural Council.

This conversation took place prior to the performance of “Music for 4 Instruments in Memoriam: Song of the Moorsoldaten” by Hanning Schröder as part of “intersonanzen 2025” at the Kunsthaus Minsk/Potsdam.
